It’s been a busy past several weeks including a quick trip to Vienna for the D2 Conference. However, I was finally able to start my next project which will be a research lab located in a heavily wooded context. I have yet to illustrate a project situated within a dense grove of trees and this will bring with it a new series of conditions to explore such as lots of filtered light, unique reflections in glass and just the complexity of rendering/illustrating trees. For now, I am posting some of the 3D studies I did to arrive at the final form. More coming soon.
Did you render this? Or you used sketchup and photoshop only? How did you do a consistent reddish filter look? I always enjoy looking at your visuals!! Thanks for sharing this!
I did a quick clay render in V-Ray, colored it in Photoshop, and used a topaz adjustment.
哥 简直太帅了,中国的粉丝很佩服你,希望有机会来中国

Will this be on the Portfolio #4? I love those diagrams!
No, Portfolio Vol. 4 is going through test prints as we speak!
Can’t wait to see next!
Hi Alex, been a fan since college, love your work, really looking forward to this being post processed;
Looking at this models underbelly I was just wondering do you use many PlugIns? Any favourites or “must haves” for curved forms? I’m looking into Artisan at the moment. Do you use anything like this?
I used a similar workflow as seen in this post: https://visualizingarchitecture.com/lofting-basics-process/
Cool! Can’t wait for the next post in this series 😀
Alex – it’s always such a pleasure to open your site and find a new post. I look forward to each new project like an eager student awaiting the teachers next lesson. Always inspirational – always rendered with such clarity and care.
Recently, I have been doing a lot of research on deconstructionism and parametricism as design movements, and for the time being, I am subscribing to their take on a more emotive and fluid design-language for forming tectonic experiences. Do these forms influence your design process?
What thoughts do you have about these emerging shapes and forms in larger scale constructs (high rise, multi-purpose, museum, stadium, public facility, etc), and how they are received and considered by practitioners of architecture today?
Hi alex
When you deisgn real projects, how do you know the outcome out of all the possibilities, I felt frastrated when I’m looking at my models, having no directions at all, it happens a lot, How did you managed to build out the design you really want?
This project reminds me of Frei Otto experiments with bubbles and architecture. Great work always! Thanks a bunch Alex
thank you !
Can you make a tutorial on how to do such illustrative renders? :O I’ve been trying to figure it out but I can’t get the right finish.
new fan, love your work!
Awesome !! I’m currently designing a oceanography lab for my graduate project too ! Looking Forward for your work ! 🙂
中国粉丝组团来拜访你,哈哈!
very nice 3d work.
you are really a legend.
