If you have not seen this video by Alex Roman and you’re a student of architecture, watch it now. A buddy of mine in grad school showed me this video in the thick of thesis. The video has become a huge source of inspiration and has influenced most, if not all of my illustrations since I first saw it. It has also been a great way to pick my spirits up from the stress of architecture and keep the motivation alive haha.
One other thing, this is all CG. Everything (modeling, textures, lighting, rendering) was done by Roman. Even the music was composed by him. Amazing.

great site, Think some of these tips will really help as final thesis presentations approach.
Every time I see this video I am blown away. It has become a staple in the architectural realm.
It's interesting to me that this is a huge source of inspiration in your rendering when he used 3DsMax and Vray to render his images but you seem to have stayed with (and mastered) photoshop and done your work in post-processing.
Simply for discussion: do you think this type of photo realistic renders are possible without a rendering program like vray?
Thank you for keeping such a blog, it's of great inspiration for me.
I think this video expresses a part of the essence of architecture: light, time, atmosphere, materials…with great sensibility, and I thank you for sharing it with us.
Very interesting and inspirating.
Hope you'll continue this beautiful website!
I wonder what PC he used to make this movie…. probably better than chuck norris lol
Kyle,
The video is an inspiration to me not because of the programs he used to make it, but the quality of space, light, and textures he achieved. Those qualities are what I try to apply to my renderings, though the outcome may not be as realistic as Roman's. No matter the realism a student or professional can achieve with a rendering, there is a lot to learn from a video like this.
Sap,
I think he said somewhere that he used a computer with a quadcore in it.
Alex,
I couldn't agree more. And your renderings really do express a beautiful character through the lighting and textures you apply.
I was thinking about how these different 'styles' of renderings might have a specific place in the design/presentation process. I read an article of a firm that expressed concern about showing photorealistic renders to clients too early in the design process because the client then latches on to that specific design – even if there are still many adjustments to be made. Since photoshop is more like digital painting, I was wondering if that style becomes more expressive – trying to convey the experience of the space rather than the details.
Regardless – both your images/tutorials and Alex Roman's video have inspried and helped me a ton over the past few years! Thanks so much and keep it up!
Thanks for sharing this piece of art, stunning! Another good reason to keep coming back to read your blog 🙂
